Borewell vs Openwell Submersible Pump in India: Which Type Is Best for Your Site?
Mohit VekariaShare
Choose a borewell submersible pump for a suitable narrow bore or tube well; choose an openwell model for an openwell or sump installation that matches its design. The best type must fit the source, water levels and required flow at the working head. Matching motor HP alone is not enough.
Before comparing models in India, confirm where the pump will sit, the water levels it will experience and where the water must go.
Compare the installation first
| Point to check | Borewell installation | Openwell or sump installation |
|---|---|---|
| Available space | Bore diameter and required clearance limit the pump size. | The well or sump must provide space and a suitable mounting arrangement. |
| Water information | Pumping water level and source yield are important. | Usable high and low levels affect the installation. |
| Model selection | Check the borewell model's performance and motor requirements. | Check the chosen openwell model's performance, orientation and water-cover requirements. |
| Source stop | Choose an appropriate method to detect or prevent an unsuitable water condition. | A supported sump-level signal may form part of the stop logic. |
These are typical selection questions. Always use the installation instructions for the exact pump, including cooling and minimum water-cover conditions.
Why the shape is different
A narrow bore limits the outside diameter of the pump and motor. Borewell models often use a multistage arrangement to produce the required duty within that space.
An openwell gives different installation options. Manufacturers offer different openwell layouts, so do not assume every model can be placed horizontally or vertically.
C.R.I.'s borewell range shows the importance of bore size. Suguna's openwell listings illustrate a different product category. Compare the intended use as well as the shape.
Compare the same water duty
Write down the required flow and have the working head calculated. Ask each supplier how much water its proposed model delivers at that duty.
Do not choose a borewell pump only because it advertises a higher maximum head. Nor should an openwell pump be chosen only because it has a larger outlet. The performance curve and permitted operating range are the useful evidence.
A quoted HP figure is an output rating for the motor, not a guaranteed number of litres per minute at your outlet.
Check what happens when the source level changes
A borewell can have a different water level while pumping from its resting level. A sump can empty before the roof tank fills. Both situations need to be considered before setting automatic operation.
The full-tank stop and the source-water stop have different jobs. For a sump transfer system, the two-tank control guide explains the required decisions.
Can one type replace the other?
Not by matching HP alone. A change needs a check of physical fit, cooling, the performance curve, cable, pipe, motor and control arrangement. A pump suitable for one installation may be unsuitable in another.
Ask the supplier to confirm the proposed arrangement in writing. Installation and electrical work should be completed by qualified people using the manufacturer's method.
Choose the control after the pump duty is settled
Confirm phase, current and starting requirements before ordering the panel. Then decide whether the application needs manual operation, timers, tank-level control or a combination supported by the selected model.
