Water Softener Feed: Raw-Tank Refilling and Dry-Run Protection

Mohit Vekaria

For a softener fed from a raw-water tank, assess both automatic raw-tank refilling and a supported low-water or dry-run stop for the feed pump. They perform different jobs. Mohit Vekaria recommends considering both in this application; the exact arrangement must follow the pump and softener requirements.

Follow the water path first

Identify the source that fills the raw-water tank, the pump that feeds the softener and the destination for softened water. There may be more than one pump and more than one tank.

If the raw tank empties, treatment or water delivery can be interrupted. A feed pump that continues without an adequate water supply may be exposed to dry-running damage. The exact risk to the softener itself depends on its design and operating stage; do not assume every softener suffers the same damage.

Automatic refill addresses availability

A compatible level-control starter can request raw-tank filling at the intended low level and stop at full, subject to source availability and its supported interlocks.

This reduces dependence on someone remembering to refill the tank. It cannot create incoming water during an unavailable supply or power cut. The source that fills the raw tank may need its own availability check.

Dry-run or low-water control addresses a different event

The feed pump needs an appropriate stop or inhibition when usable raw water is unavailable. Depending on the verified design, detection may use source level, inlet conditions or the pump's supported protection method.

Do not describe a refill float as complete dry-run protection for every downstream pump. Likewise, motor-current monitoring does not prove that the treatment unit has the inlet conditions it requires.

Which VUKAR panel families are relevant?

For the raw-tank refill pump, assess the phase- and pump-matched level-control family: MOA for a compatible single-phase monoblock arrangement, OPA for openwell, BOA for borewell, or the appropriate three-phase level family.

The softener feed-pump starter must separately match its motor, required process permissions and protection. No exact feed-pump SKU is assigned until that interface is confirmed. A suitable existing treatment controller should be retained where it already handles the task correctly.

Respect the softener's own sequence

Check the actual manufacturer's requirements for service, regeneration and water supply. A motor starter is not a regeneration controller, hardness monitor or proof that softened water meets its specification.

Commission refill demand, full stop, low-water inhibition and the documented recovery sequence together. Confirm what requires inspection or reset after interrupted treatment.

Using both functions can improve execution of the intended supply plan and reduce exposure to a defined no-water condition. It does not guarantee uninterrupted treatment or prevent every equipment fault.
