Estimate what your water pump costs to run.

Enter motor output power and efficiency to estimate energy use and running cost. Add verified electrical details when you also need an estimated current and kVA.

Step 1

Enter pump usage

Use motor nameplate or verified data.

Use the motor nameplate, datasheet or verified test value.

Also estimate current and kVAOptional

Use actual nameplate, manufacturer or measured values. No electrical value is assumed.

Supply phase

Three phase: line-to-line voltage. Single phase: supply voltage.

Ratio of active power (kW) to apparent power (kVA).

Step 2

Your estimate

Enter your pump power, runtime and electricity rate.

Fixed charges and taxes are not included.
Which power value should I use?

Use the motor's rated shaft output in hp, kW or W and its efficiency from the nameplate or manufacturer data. The calculator divides output power by efficiency to estimate electrical input power.

Formula and assumptions

Energy per run = input kW × run hours. Monthly energy = energy per run × runs/day × operating days. Cost = kWh × your energy rate. Apparent power = input kW ÷ power factor. Current uses input power ÷ (voltage × power factor) for single phase and input power ÷ (√3 × line voltage × power factor) for three phase.

What this estimate excludes
  • Fixed charges, demand charges, slab changes, taxes, penalties and subsidies.
  • Power variation with voltage, loading, pump head, flow, wear and controls.
  • Different runtime or tariff across seasons.
Nameplate comparison and safety

The comparison only shows the numerical difference between the estimated running current and the current you enter. It does not validate the motor or installation. Do not open or probe live electrical equipment unless you are qualified and using appropriate equipment; direct measurement remains more reliable.

Use this calculator to estimate a water pump's electrical energy use and running cost. The tool works from motor output, estimated efficiency, power factor, operating time and your local electricity tariff.

Use the correct inputs

Read motor HP or kW from the nameplate. Efficiency converts motor output into estimated electrical input kW; runtime and the per-kWh tariff determine this tool’s energy-cost estimate. Power factor, supply phase and voltage are used separately for the optional current and kVA estimate; power factor does not directly multiply this calculator’s kWh cost. Use verified inputs.

Understand the result

The output is an estimate of energy consumption and cost for the period shown. Actual bills can differ because load, voltage, pump condition, flow restriction, starts, tariff slabs, demand charges and other site loads vary. Do not treat the result as a guaranteed bill amount.

Use it for comparison

Keep the same duty and water requirement when comparing two options. If measured current or power differs greatly from the estimate, ask a qualified electrician or pump technician to inspect the installation before changing protection settings or equipment.
