Star Delta Starter: Working, Motor Requirements and DOL Comparison
VUKAR AutomationShare
A star-delta starter begins with a compatible three-phase motor connected in star, then changes to delta for running. The motor must have the required accessible terminals and a delta voltage rating suitable for the supply. Reduced starting current also means reduced starting torque.
How a star-delta starter works
| Stage | What happens | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Start in star | The approved starter connects the windings in star. | Reduce winding voltage and starting current. |
| Transition | The star connection is released and the specified switching sequence is completed. | Change the winding arrangement using the designed interlocking and timing. |
| Run in delta | The starter connects the windings in delta for normal operation. | Apply the intended running voltage to each winding. |
The actual control and power wiring must follow the supplied starter and motor diagrams. The stages above explain the method; they are not a terminal-by-terminal wiring instruction.
Motor requirements
Schneider Electric's installation guide states that the method applies to three-phase motors with all six stator terminals accessible and a delta connection voltage corresponding to the supply. Check the complete nameplate and terminal arrangement before selecting a panel.
- Motor voltage ratings in star and delta.
- Full-load current and rated power.
- Access to the required winding terminals.
- The load's torque during starting and acceleration.
- Permitted starting frequency and the operating duty.
- The site's supply and installation requirements.
Why starting torque matters
Under the usual ideal comparison for the same motor and supply, star starting gives roughly one-third of the direct-on-line starting current and torque. Real starting performance depends on the motor, load and supply.
A heavily loaded machine may not accelerate successfully with the reduced torque. The designer must check the load curve and transition conditions. A larger HP label alone does not prove that star-delta is the correct starting method.
DOL versus star-delta
| Check | DOL | Star-delta |
|---|---|---|
| Starting connection | Applies full supply voltage through the designed starter. | Starts in star and changes to delta. |
| Starting current and torque | Determined by the motor at full-voltage starting. | Reduced during the star stage. |
| Motor compatibility | Use a motor and starter suitable for the supply and duty. | Check six accessible terminals and the required delta voltage rating. |
| Control arrangement | Generally simpler. | Requires a designed transition sequence and interlocking. |
Contactors, overload and interlocking
A conventional star-delta arrangement uses line, star and delta contactors. The assembly needs the correct electrical and mechanical interlocking so that incompatible contactors cannot close together.
Overload settings depend on the relay's location in the circuit and the manufacturer's design. Do not apply one percentage to every panel. Use the actual wiring diagram and commissioning instructions.
Information to send a panel manufacturer
Send a clear nameplate photograph, the machine or pump application, supply details, expected starts per hour and the starting load. Explain whether you need manual control, automatic water-level control, timers or an external remote ON/OFF input.
If you want an external remote switch, tell the manufacturer before ordering so that the required control connection can be provided. The remote switch must work through the approved control circuit, with the required stop and protection functions retained.
Commissioning checks
A qualified installer should verify the motor connection, contactor sequence, overload arrangement, earthing and protective devices. Record the observed starting behaviour and current under the actual load. If acceleration or transition is unsatisfactory, investigate the cause before repeated starting.
Common questions
Can every three-phase motor use star-delta?
No. Check the voltage ratings, accessible terminals and load requirements.
Is there one HP cutoff for all sites?
No. Starter selection also depends on motor current, starting duty, load and supply conditions.
Does a timer alone make a star-delta starter?
No. The complete power and control assembly needs the specified contactors, protection, interlocking and wiring.
For existing DOL options, see the three-phase DOL panel comparison. Collect your motor information using the starter-selection guide.
