Belt Conveyor Motor: Heavy-Duty Starter for Food and Packing Lines

Mohit Vekaria

A fixed-speed belt conveyor motor can use a heavy-duty starter matched to its phase, rated current and starting load. Remote START/STOP is useful when the operator works away from the panel, but it must preserve the line’s stop devices, guards and equipment interlocks. Keep a VFD where the conveyor requires adjustable speed.

Choose the motor control around the packing line

A belt conveyor can move ingredients, cartons or filled packs. Its control must fit the equipment before and after it. Starting a belt while the next machine is stopped may cause a product build-up even when the conveyor motor itself is electrically healthy.

Use the line’s approved start and stop sequence. When a downstream machine cannot receive product, the upstream supply needs a coordinated response. Remote ON/OFF is a command location, not a complete line-control design. Keep emergency stops, pull-cord switches and guard interlocks wherever the machine design requires them.

Choose the arrangement that matches the machine
Situation Practical action
Fixed-speed DOL conveyor Use a current-matched heavy-duty starter suited to the starting load.
Variable-speed conveyor Retain the VFD and use its supported control interface.
Conveyor starts with products on it Share the loaded-start condition and starts per hour with the manufacturer.
Operator stands away from the panel Request the remote-switch terminals and the intended restart behaviour.

Why specify a heavy-duty build?

For this application, specify the heavy-duty build for the actual running and starting duty. Long runs require the panel to carry the motor current in its installation conditions. Frequent starts add a separate switching requirement. Give VUKAR the motor phase, HP, nameplate current and expected duty so the selected contactor, protection and wiring suit the job.

If the motor stops, solve the cause first

Symptoms and useful next checks
Situation Practical action
Belt stalls with product present Stop feeding and check for jammed product, mechanical drag or excess loading.
Motor runs but belt slips Have belt tension, drive transmission and contamination checked.
Trips after running normally Compare current under load and inspect motor cooling and belt drag.
Line restarts after power recovery Configure the required operator restart and line permissions.

Practical operating example

A conveyor carries sealed packs to a carton station. If the carton station stops, packs can accumulate at the transfer point. The useful solution links conveyor availability to the line, rather than relying on someone to notice a growing pile and reach the main panel.

Remote ON/OFF: arrange the connection when ordering

Tell the manufacturer that you need a wired remote ON/OFF switch so they can provide the required switch connections. A normal fan or tubelight ON/OFF switch can send the command where the supplied control circuit supports it. The starter carries the motor load. Preserve the machine’s safety and process interlocks.

  1. 1 · COMMANDOperator requests ON/OFFThe agreed wired switch sends a control command.
  2. 2 · PERMISSIONControls permit operationMotor protection and machine interlocks remain in the approved circuit.
  3. 3 · MOTORStarter switches the loadThe motor follows the permitted command.

For supervised manual operation, request a fresh START after power recovery or a cleared trip. Have the manufacturer configure pump-oriented underload, automatic retry and timer functions for this machine instead of copying pump settings. A qualified electrician should install and commission the panel; isolate the machine before servicing.

Common questions

Can I add a remote wall switch near the packing station?

Yes, where the manufacturer provides a compatible command connection and the machine-control design permits it. Request that facility when ordering.

Can I use a motor starter to slow the belt?

A DOL starter does not vary speed. Use the correct VFD or other drive arrangement if the process needs adjustable belt speed.
