Agitator Motor: Heavy-Duty Starter for Food Mixing Tanks

Mohit Vekaria

For a fixed-speed agitator motor, select a heavy-duty starter matched to phase, nameplate current and mixing duty. Use manual ON/OFF when the operator controls each batch. If the process needs adjustable speed, keep the suitable VFD or original drive controller; a DOL starter provides starting and stopping, not speed adjustment.

CONTROLKeep process interlocksLid, level or process permissions remain part of the machine control.

Select for the real mixing load

Agitators are used in food and beverage mixing tanks, including processes that require different mixing times and product consistencies. Describe the actual batch rather than selecting a starter from tank capacity alone. A motor driving a gearbox can turn the shaft slowly even while the motor runs at its normal speed.

A mixer that starts easily in a thin liquid may face a different load in a thick batch. State the normal and most demanding approved product conditions when ordering. The starter should protect the motor while it works within the mixer’s design, not allow a small motor to mix beyond that design.

Choose the arrangement that matches the machine
Situation Practical action
Fixed-speed three-phase DOL drive Choose the matching heavy-duty three-phase starter and current range.
Compatible single-phase drive Use the appropriate heavy-duty single-phase build; MOM-C 3 HP is only for a compatible motor rating.
Speed is part of the recipe Retain the drive that controls speed and integrate commands through its approved inputs.
Long mixing period State run duration, starts per batch and ambient conditions for the panel selection.

Why specify a heavy-duty build?

For this application, specify the heavy-duty build for the actual running and starting duty. Long runs require the panel to carry the motor current in its installation conditions. Frequent starts add a separate switching requirement. Give VUKAR the motor phase, HP, nameplate current and expected duty so the selected contactor, protection and wiring suit the job.

If the motor stops, solve the cause first

Symptoms and useful next checks
Situation Practical action
Trips with a thicker batch Check the approved product consistency, batch level and measured motor current.
Motor runs but shaft does not turn Check the coupling and gearbox through the machine’s servicing procedure.
Stops when the lid opens Confirm the intended lid interlock; do not bypass it to keep the batch running.
Trips only during startup Review starting load and starting method with the mixer manufacturer.

Practical operating example

A tank agitator mixes a low-viscosity product for one batch and a thicker product for another. Choose protection around the motor’s rated current and the approved process range. Increasing the trip setting for the thicker product can leave the same motor without suitable overload protection.

Remote ON/OFF: arrange the connection when ordering

Tell the manufacturer that you need a wired remote ON/OFF switch so they can provide the required switch connections. A normal fan or tubelight ON/OFF switch can send the command where the supplied control circuit supports it. The starter carries the motor load. Preserve the machine’s safety and process interlocks.

  1. 1 · COMMANDOperator requests ON/OFFThe agreed wired switch sends a control command.
  2. 2 · PERMISSIONControls permit operationMotor protection and machine interlocks remain in the approved circuit.
  3. 3 · MOTORStarter switches the loadThe motor follows the permitted command.

For supervised manual operation, request a fresh START after power recovery or a cleared trip. Have the manufacturer configure pump-oriented underload, automatic retry and timer functions for this machine instead of copying pump settings. A qualified electrician should install and commission the panel; isolate the machine before servicing.

Common questions

Will a cyclic timer maintain the right mixing speed?

No. A timer controls duration or run/pause periods. Speed requires the appropriate drive or mechanical arrangement.

Does the starter protect the gearbox as well?

Electrical motor protection does not replace gearbox lubrication, torque protection or the mixer’s mechanical safeguards. Keep those provisions in the machine design.
