Convert HP and kW

Converted power0.7457 kW
1 × 0.7456998716 = 0.7457 kW

Using mechanical horsepower. 1 HP ≈ 0.7457 kW.

How to convert HP to kW

For mechanical horsepower, multiply the HP value by 0.7456998716. For a quick answer, use 0.7457.

kW = HP × 0.7456998716

How to convert kW to HP

Divide the kW value by 0.7456998716. You can also multiply kW by about 1.34102.

HP = kW ÷ 0.7456998716

The calculator uses more decimal places than the short formulas above. The selected horsepower definition changes the factor; it does not change the size of a kilowatt.

HP to kW conversion chart

These charts use mechanical horsepower, rounded to four decimal places. They are unit conversions, not a list of equivalent catalogue motor models.

Common HP to kW examples

1 HP to kW

1 × 0.7456998716 = 0.7457 kW, rounded. It is often shortened to about 0.746 kW.

5 HP to kW

5 × 0.7456998716 = 3.7285 kW, rounded.

7.5 HP to kW

7.5 × 0.7456998716 = 5.5927 kW, rounded. A catalogue may pair nominal HP and kW motor sizes differently. Read both ratings from the actual nameplate when comparing motors.

0.75 kW to HP

0.75 ÷ 0.7456998716 = 1.0058 HP, rounded. That is why 0.75 kW is close to, but not exactly, one mechanical horsepower.

Which horsepower definition should I choose?

Mechanical horsepower: the default here. One hp is 550 foot-pounds-force per second, or about 745.699872 W.

Electrical horsepower: one electrical HP is exactly 746 W. Choose it when the source explicitly uses this definition.

Metric horsepower: often written as PS or CV. One metric horsepower is 735.49875 W. It gives a slightly different answer from mechanical horsepower.

Use the definition stated in your source. If a motor shows both HP and kW, keep its printed ratings when selecting equipment.

Does HP to kW tell me electricity consumption?

It converts power units. For a motor's rated shaft output, the result is still output power. Electrical input also depends on efficiency and load.

For example, a motor delivering 1 mechanical HP at 80% efficiency needs about 0.932 kW of electrical input at that operating point: 0.7457 ÷ 0.80. This is an example, not a fixed input for every 1 HP motor.

Electricity use is measured in kWh. For a steady measured input, kWh = input kW × hours. Use the motor input and current calculator or pump electricity cost calculator for those calculations.

HP to kW: common questions

How many kW is 1 HP?

One mechanical HP is about 0.7457 kW. One electrical HP is 0.746 kW. One metric horsepower is about 0.7355 kW. Choose the definition used in your source.

How many HP is 1 kW?

One kW is about 1.3410 mechanical HP, 1.3405 electrical HP or 1.3596 metric horsepower.

Is 1 HP equal to 0.75 kW?

0.75 kW is a common rounded motor-rating comparison. The unit conversion for one mechanical horsepower is about 0.7457 kW.

Does the conversion change for single-phase and three-phase motors?

No. A unit of power keeps the same conversion factor. Supply phase matters when calculating current, not when converting the same power value between HP and kW.

Can I convert HP directly to amps?

HP alone is not enough to find a motor's running current. You also need the voltage, phase, efficiency and power factor for the operating condition.

What is the difference between kW and kWh?

kW measures power. kWh measures energy used over time. A steady electrical input of 1 kW for one hour uses 1 kWh.
